Finding Jeans That Fit Without Endless Alterations

Finding Jeans That Fit Without Endless Alterations

Rise, thigh and the two-finger waistband test — and why stretch percentage matters more than size.

Denim sizing is inconsistent across brands, so fit is easier to judge by feel than by number.

Check the rise first

High rise sits at the navel, mid rise below it. The rise decides the whole silhouette — pick it before the leg shape.

The two-finger test

You should fit two fingers inside the waistband, no more. Jeans loosen about half a size with wear.

Stretch

Two per cent elastane keeps shape. Five per cent is comfortable on day one and baggy by evening. Rigid denim moulds to you but will not forgive a tight thigh.
